A Guide to Taking Your Baby on Their First Outing

As I creep closer to 37 weeks pregnant, I can’t help but think about all the adventures I want to have with my daughter once she’s here. My fondest childhood memories are of discovering new places, exploring, and being around things that stimulated my senses — and I can’t wait to share that with her.

Of course, I know it will take time before I step out of the newborn bubble and start taking her out of the house. My first outings will probably be small — visiting grandparents, grabbing a coffee, or doing a quick shop. Over time, we’ll work our way up to bigger outings.

If you’re thinking about your first outing with your little one, here’s a guide to help you prepare and some ideas of places you might want to explore together.

Things to Consider Before Your First Outing

Leaving the house with a newborn can feel like a big deal, and that’s because it is! A little preparation goes a long way. Here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Check with your doctor about when it’s safe to take your baby out.

  • Start small with a walk around the block or a quick visit to family.

  • Time your outing for after a feed and nappy change, when your baby is calm.

  • Pack your bag the night before to avoid last-minute stress.

  • Research baby-friendly spots with change facilities and quiet areas.

  • Practice with your gear (pram, carrier, or car seat) at home so you’re confident.

Key Tips for a Smooth First Outing

  • Dress your baby appropriately for the weather with light, breathable layers.

  • Protect your baby from the sun with shade, hats, and clothing (especially under 6 months).

  • Keep it short and simple at first.

  • Avoid crowds and sick people, particularly with very young babies.

  • Don’t push through if you or your baby feel overwhelmed — it’s okay to head home.

  • Trust your instincts and take it slow.

  • Fresh air and a change of scenery are beneficial for both you and your baby.

  • Practice makes perfect — every outing gets a little easier.

Where to Go: Outing Ideas for You and Your Baby

When you’re ready to venture out, here are some fun (and practical) places to try — from simple beginnings to bigger adventures.

Simple & Everyday Outings

  • Grandparents or family visits – A safe, familiar start for both you and bub.

  • Local park – Free, outdoors, and great for introducing your baby to grass, sand, or fresh air. Pack a blanket and enjoy a picnic.

  • Cafés – Baby-friendly cafés with space for prams are perfect for easing into outings while treating yourself.

  • Play dates – Meeting up with another mum at home or a quiet spot gives your baby a chance to socialise in a low-stress environment.

Stimulating & Sensory Outings

  • Aquarium – Babies love watching fish and sea life glide past; it’s both calming and fascinating for them.

  • Art museums or light shows – Great for encouraging sensory development and eye tracking, though not ideal for fussy babies.

  • Baby sensory classes – Structured play designed to stimulate your baby’s senses while connecting with other mums.

Social & Learning Outings

  • Local library storytime – Many libraries run free or low-cost sessions for babies and toddlers, a great way to bond and build routines.

  • Baby spa – A little more boujie, but lovely for introducing water in a calm, pampering way.

  • Public pool – Affordable baby swim classes are fantastic for water confidence, bonding, and trust-building.

Bigger Adventures (When You’re Ready)

  • Zoo or wildlife park – A whole day out with lots to see; great for older babies in prams. Pair it with animal-themed stories later.

  • Petting zoos or farms – Babies love the sensory experience of feeling different textures like fur or feathers.

  • Beach – The sound of waves, the breeze, and the textures of sand are wonderful sensory play (just make sure bub is shaded and sun-safe).

  • Indoor play centres – More suited to toddlers, but handy once your little one is older and on the move.

Taking your baby on their first outing can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. Start small, go at your own pace, and remember that fresh air and a change of scenery benefit you both. Each outing will boost your confidence and help you find your own rhythm as a mum.

And most importantly? Soak up those little moments — the wide eyes at the aquarium, the smiles in the park, the quiet cuddles at storytime. They’ll become some of your most treasured memories.
